‘One Piece’ Vol. 97 Recap & Spoilers
The Volume starts with a chapter including a ship battle between Luffy, Trafalgar and Eustass against the enemy, Kaido’s forces. Despite the lack of firepower against their enemy, they made it seem like they were on par against their instruments of war using each and everyone’s abilities, making it an equal fight for both sides.
That seems to be until the lord of the Yakuza, Kyoshiro, arrived on the battlefield. In no way was that any good news for Kaido’s forces. That notion was further supported when he had sliced upon their cannons, Kaido’s forces had realized the sad truth seeing the cannons being rendered useless. The battle suddenly turned into a one-sided war in the ocean.
Their defeat was much more labeled if you take in the fact that in the last volume, Kyoshiro was Denjiro all along. Having killed Kozuki Hiyori, Denjiro hadn’t just simply taken actions to render some of Orochi’s ships useless but he had also freed Oden’s imprisoned loyalists and had him fight alongside him. 1,200 men joined the fray to shift the fight once again.
Orochi knew of this plan quite a long time but Denjiro mentions that he was quite slow on ever acting against it. Orochi sank the slower ships in the fleet but hardly did anything as the force still stood with a number of 5,400 soldiers – numbers that broke through the first waves of Orochi’s army. Kin’emon had thought that the feelt had abandoned them simply assuming they were in a false meeting point.
Luffy, Jimbei Fight
The battle with Luffy had taken a turn when Jimbei had shown himself finally — after being last seen in the Whole Cake Island arc, we get to see him fight alongside the strawhat crew once again whilst Momonosuke was held captive by Kanjuro. The crew became the first line of defense in Tori Gates, they had opened a gap in the defense line so they could reach their destination only to find drunken guards, sinks shunk from behind the crew as they proceeded leaving them no stepping stone to turn back to.
Kin’emon and Oden’s loyalists had begun their raid upon Onigashima, Orochi himself being unsatisfied with how the battle was going while simply drinking himself. Trafalgar Law sunk down to the depths in the water while Chopper rides a tank as planned to attack and assault both Kaido and Orochi’s party in the upcoming battle. The plan to sneak in was useless, however, as Luffy was enraged as he watched Orochi’s soldiers gobble and feast themselves on exquisite food while the people in Wano have nothing to eat other than poisonous food. In his rage, he had forced himself to encounter and fight these soldiers, alongside with Zoro who had the same thought as Luffy.
It was a mistake fighting by Queen’s crew but just as the numbers and scratchman Apoo’s strength had proven to give Luffy and Zoro a disadvantage in the fight, Kid had arrived and shifted the tides in the battle alongside Killer. They were able to break away and siege the castle. Apoo attempted to pursue them but was intercepted by ex-Commander of the first division in Whitebeard’s wing, Marco the Phoenix.
As Luffy and his group lay siege, the rest had continued to go with their plan and sneaked inside Kaido’s lair. Big Mom, however, finds herself the tank in which Chopper was operating as they pass by her dressing room, immediately chasing them down on sight wanting them to give the Strawhat to her. Other members of the group break into silent action inside Kaido’s castle, closer to the center chamber as time flew by in the many fights that were happening. Luffy ended up fighting 6 Tobbi Roppo members by himself but then was aided by Yamato, Kaido’s son. Supposedly female at birth, he admits that he does have an idolization of Oden as his father killed him- something he had since discovering Oden’s journal.
Kanjoru gave notice to Orochi of Kin’emon’s survival prompting Orochi to make a sudden attack. Momonosuke was crucified, a decision brought to him when Kanjuro nabbed him away. Orochi then reveals Kin’emon’s plan and its secret to his soldiers, the drunken army discussed to themselves while the assault force had hid in the crowd as they listened in horror. Kaido then announces his new plan — the supposed “New Onigashima Project.”
